This year fifth grade embarked on a service learning project that involved helping others around the world in 25 different countries (including the United States).  Heifer International is an organization that provides families with farm animals that help them to have food, earn an income and farm their land.  We began by asking students to vote on which program they wanted to take part in, and Heifer Harvest International was selected.  Then we decided to have the service learning project run for two weeks.  Students were involved in the morning announcements, collecting money throughout the school and writing those collections down on a collection sheet.  Students listened to the book Beatrice’s Goat in language arts, and in math they worked out the math on what animals could be purchased with the amount we had collected.  The top five combinations of choices were posted in the hallway and each student was given the opportunity to cast their vote.  Selected students gave a presentation at a Roadrunner Rally and were interviewed about their thoughts and choices during the service learning project.  All told $739.84 was raised to help families in need.
